Frederik and Annie top Dubai Fitness Championships

Denmark’s Frederik Aegidius and Iceland’s Annie Thorisdottir topped the men’s and women’s categories to pick up the first prize of Dh200,000 each at the end of the 2nd Dubai Fitness Championships that ended at the ice rink of The Dubai Mall on Saturday.

Frederik had entered the third and final day of the competition in fifth place with a tally of 293 points. However on the final night, the Norwegian was too good as he ended at the top of the standings with 898 points leaving four Americans in the next four positions.

In second place was Kenneth Leverich with a total of 854 points, Tanner Shuck took third place with 832 points, while fellow countrymen Justin Ahrens and Ryan Fischer followed in fourth and fifth respectively.

In the women’s final, American Lindsey Valenzuela dominated the first two days of competition to stay on top. But on the final day with double the points at stake it was Annie Thorisdottir’s total of 935 points pushing the American into second place with 913 points. Marlene Andersson representing Kuwait who had stayed in third place overnight took her rightful spot with 861 points.

Kenneth Leverich and Lindsey Valenzuela had been at the top of the leaderboard at the end of qualifying that was held at three Fitness First locations in Dubai from August 18 till September 8.

After the qualifying rounds were completed earlier this month, the best 36 men and 36 women had been selected to compete in the final rounds that were held over three days at Al Wasl Club and the ice rink of The Dubai Mall.

Held under the patronage of Sheikh Majid bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, the championship is aimed at raising the awareness on the importance of exercise and health, while promoting fitness among UAE residents, especially among Emiratis.

In the men’s section, the best UAE competitor was Mahmoud Shalan as he ended in 11th place with a points tally of 642, followed by Khalifa Al Qubaisi in 14th place, Rashid Al Mulla in 18th and Marwan Al Marri in 23rd position.

Telephone operator du was the main sponsor while Dubai Sports Council was the official partner of the event.
