Villagers take over army base

COLOMBIA, TORIBIO : Tired of being caught in the crossfire between FARC guerrillas and the army, a group of indigenous people in Cauca state in southern Colombia have decided to take back control of their homeland. The villagers took over a police station and military base, disarming the troops' defences, and destroyed mortar shells the FARC had left in the area. The region has long been a key battleground in Colombia´s 50 year conflict - on Thursday the guerrillas claimed to have shot down a miliary plane nearby.
