Although his driver’s licence had been suspended for exceeding the maximum number of black points, a 20-year-old Emirati motorist drove a four-wheel drive vehicle with expired registration and hit a mini bus on Endurance Race Village Road, causing the death of a passenger and injuries to 16 people.

Chief Prosecutor Salah Al Falasi noted that Emiratis formed the majority of motorists who caused deaths on the roads, with seven such cases since the beginning of this year.

Investigating the accident, the Dubai Prosecution found out that the driver, who was not injured in the accident, had his driving licence suspended for three months by the authorities on May 15 for exceeding the black points ceiling.

The registration of the car he was driving had also expired last January 30.

The four-wheel drive vehicle hit a mini bus at 7.45pm on Saturday from behind causing the bus to deviate for about 25 metres before it hit a barrier.

The bus driver and four passengers were seriously injured, one of whom died on Sunday morning. The other passengers are receiving medical treatment for moderate and minor injuries.

The driver was put in detention to continue investigations into the accident and hearing of witnesses who were at the scene of the accident.

The prosecution will also investigate with the bus driver for having more than the permitted number of passengers (16 passengers) in a mini bus, causing injuries to more people.
