Hussain Ibrahim Al Hammadi, the UAE’s Minister of Education, has stressed that mutual respect between teachers and students is the dominant principle in the UAE, and said that corporal punishment at schools is rejected and that a viral video of a teacher slapping a student in his classroom shows an isolated incident.

"The incident in the video which went viral on social media yesterday is not representative of the practices and standards of the country's schools and the noble values upheld by Emirati society," he said.

The Ministry of Education suspended the teacher for hitting the student and formed an inquiry committee to investigate the incident.

"All forms of physical punishment are rejected as a tool of discipline at schools. The incident is an isolated one that should not happen again," the education minister said.

Modern education methods can ensure discipline, he noted, adding that the ministry will take strict legal measures against any violations at schools.

"Teachers and students should strictly follow discipline regulations set by the Ministry of Education to ensure that the teacher-student relationship is more balanced."

Capturing the video in the classroom "encroaches on the privacy of the school and all people in it", he said, urging students not to use social media as platforms for publishing videos that can be offensive to others.

It is better, however, to report such incidents to the principal of the school or the Ministry of Education, which is the competent authority that can preserve the rights of all, Minister Al Hammadi added.
