Want a career in the sky? This is how much Etihad pilots earn

Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, is expanding rapidly, and is currently looking to hire more pilots to fly its expanding fleet.

As Emirates 24|7 reported earlier this week, most roles that the airline is looking to fill in are within the UAE, but some vacancies are also open in Australia and Saudi Arabia. Read: Etihad Airways hiring across departments.

If you’re thinking of applying for one of its open positions, here is what you can expect in pay and perquisites. Salary is very much dependent on the role and experience. Basic salary figures do not give the whole picture as there are other non-monetary benefits that accompany some roles, but here is a broad picture of what you can expect.

If you are applying for the job of a Captain (B777) with the airline, you can expect a starting salary of Dh35,200 or $9,578 per month, and an annual salary increment of 2 per cent, becoming 3 per cent after completing 5 years. You also get a flight duty allowance of Dh50 per flying hour.

Meal allowance during layovers are at Dh12 per hour for Middle East/ GCC/ Sub Continent; for Asia/ Far East it is Dh15 per hour, Africa/ Australasia it is Dh18 per hour and for Europe/ Americas you get Dh23 per hour.

Housing allowance is up to Dh170,000 per year or company provided housing, depending on availability, or the opportunity to take advantage of the company’s ‘Rent to Buy" house purchase programme.

Education allowance of Dh36,000 for primary and Dh50,400 for secondary school, for up to 4 children is also given.

Besides this, the airline also provides an income protection scheme, 42 days’ annual leave, staff travel benefits, end-of-service benefits and accidental and life insurance benefits.

The pay packages for Captains A330/340 are also more or less similar.

First Officers with the airline get a starting salary of Dh26,000 or $7,075 per month and an annual salary increment of 2 per cent.

Flight duty allowance of Dh40 per flying hour is given. Meal allowance during layovers for the Middle East/ GCC/ Sub Continent is Dh12 per hour; for Asia/ Far East it is Dh15 per hour; for Africa/ Australasia it is Dh18 per hour and for Europe/ Americas it is Dh23 per hour.

Housing allowance is given up to Dh160,000 per year or company provided housing depending on availability. Just as for Captains, First Officers can also take advantage of the ‘Rent to Buy’ house purchase programme.
Education allowance is made available of Dh36,000 for primary and Dh50,400 for secondary school, for up to 4 children.

Other benefits for a First Officer are similar to those offered to a Captain, including income protection scheme, 42 days’ annual leave, staff travel benefits, end-of-service benefits, accidental and life insurance benefits.
