No compromise is made on international architectural standards in  construction of buildings in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, said municipality officials.

They were reacting to recent reports of deaths from high-rises.

Ahmed Abdel-Raziq, Executive Director of  Dubai and Sharjah Municipalities, said, in the case of the latest tradegy where an Iranian mother and her child died after falling from the window of their eight floor apartment in MAG214 at Jumeirah Lake Toweres in Dubai, the child had brought a table to the window and climed over resulting in his fall and instant death.

He added the heights of windows at the apartment are in accordance with specified standards.

Marwan Abdullah, Head of Engineering Supervision of Dubai Municipality, said the window of the apartment where the Iranian family stays is at a height of 110 cm from the floor, while the approved specifications is a minimum 90cm (3 feet).

The mother had left her five-year old child in the apartment as she accompanied her 14-year old daughter to the school bus, according to reports. Architecture is not to be blamed. Calling for design changes because of isolated incidents is not reasonable, he said.

Similarly in an earlier incident an Indian executive jumped to his death from JLT. It was revealed the suicide was a result of a personal dispute and financial constraints.

Sharjah has also seen a number of fatal falls in the recent past. An Asian in his 50s who was on visit to the UAE committed suicide by jumping from the 12th floor of Al Huda Tower in Al Khan area of Sharjah last month, while an African visitorjumped to his death from his sixth floor home in Al Nadha area last week.
