50 surveillance cameras will be fixed in key Sharjah areas and some shopping centers such as Mega Mall and Hamriyah Port. These will be linked with the Sharjah Police operations, according to Maj Gen Humaid Mohammed Al Hadidi, Director General of Sharjah Police.

He said there is a plan to deploy more surveillance cameras in vital areas of the emirate. He was addressing the Sharjah Executive Council on the policy of the police and public security in the emirate.

A number of new police stations will be opened during the remaining months of this year in several industrial areas of the emirate.

Maj Gen Al Hadidi said a study is pending before the Minister of Interior for the integration of police academic institutions at the federal level.

“There are currently three police academies - one each in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah. One of them deals with graduation of officers, the second on teaching security courses and programmes, and the third has programmes for preparing leaders.

“The study on the integration of the police academies aims to reduce cost. The cost of graduation of each officer is about Dh800 000.

"Future security planning in the emirate of Sharjah depends on the provision of police stations with integrated services, so applicants can find all security services in any police station,” said Maj Gen Al Hadidi.

He added that the new police stations will provide services of the Naturalisation And Residence. This is already being done by the police station in the eastern region.

"His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council member and Ruler of Sharjah, has instructed the development of penal and correctional institutions. We are currently coordination with the concerned authorities to implement such instructions,” said Maj Gen Al Hadidi.

He added that there is a study to build a new centre for treatment and rehabilitation of drug abusers and addicts.

A plot has been allocated and the centre and will be set up under the Federal Plan (2011-2015) and will be affiliated to the Department of Community Policing.

Regarding street vendors, garbage collectors and others such, Maj Gen Al Hadidi said there are ongoing campaigns in coordination with the municipality and the Department of Residence to nab these offenders and refer them to concerned authorities.

On measures to prevent entry of trucks into residential neighborhoods, he said “truck companies have been given licences for executing projects, and that any violations are prosecuted".

In response to a question on the increase in run-over accidents that led to 17 deaths in the first quarter of the year, Maj Gen Al Hadidi said there is a project to provide all the internal and external streets with radars.

The number of traffic signals will be increased, as well as pedestrian crossings.

He also revealed a plan to deploy ambulance points on the shores of the emirate to reduce incidents of drowning.

He pointed to the importance of the security education programme in collaboration with 135 schools in Sharjah, which resulted in the deployment of security culture among students and decline the crimes.

He also mentioned the decline in theft and drug abuse.

He said he had adequate number of police officers and non-commissioned officers and soldiers and noted that the effort is to focus on raising the efficiency of police personnel through internal and external training courses.
