On December 10, Saturday the moon turned completely red for the second time this year, giving UAE residents a rare show of a red moon while the setting sun was still a bright orange.

The Dubai Astronomy Group had called upon the public to go out and witness the special celestial spectacle.

According to Nasa’s website partial eclipse started at universal time 12:45:42 (16:45 local time) and ended at 16:17:58 UT (20:17 local time).

“At the instant of greatest eclipse (14:32 UT) the moon lies at the zenith in the Pacific Ocean near Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands,” the website adds.

Hasan Ahmad al Hariri of the Dubai Astronomy Group told Emirates 24|7 that the spectacle will be clearly visible in the UAE from the eastern side at 5pm local time.

“We are holding a special session on the occasion at our Zubair Astronomy Camp. It is free and we invite the public to join us on the occasion,” said Hariri.

“People can even watch it from their balconies, if it is located on the eastern side. Otherwise they can go on to the terrace,” he added.

According to him despite all awareness and advancement of modern science, there is still a misconception among the public that watching the lunar eclipse could be harmful.

“We receive so many calls about this issue. I would once again try to reiterate that it is perfectly fine to watch the lunar eclipse through the naked eye and it is safe for everyone including pregnant women to watch the event,” he said.

“Recently I had to give a guarantee to a caller who refused to believe me that his wife would be safe after watching the lunar eclipse,” he added.

Those interested to visit the Zubair Astronomy Camp can get the location map by visiting Dubai Astronomy group’s website.
