Resignation threat: Court cuts compensation

A sacked company deputy manager lost most of his compensation after the UAE’s top court ruled that an email he had sent to the management threatening to resign amounted to a resignation, a newspaper reported on Monday.

The Arab deputy chief of the Abu Dhabi-based firm had demanded Dh517,000 compensation for what he described as an arbitrary sacking decision against him.

He told court that he did send an email threatening to resign unless the management agrees to his request to issue a work visa for a new employee.

A lower court had earlier ordered the company to pay him Dh310,000 but the ruling was annulled by the Federal Supreme Court, which ordered the firm to pay him Dh91,000 as end of service benefit and an air ticket for his home country.

“The court found that the sacking decision was not arbitrary as it was in response to the deputy manager’s wish to resign,” Al Khaleej daily said.
