Alex Ferguson believes 18-year-old Paul Pogba can be as good as Dutch mid-field maestro Wesley Sneijder.
Ferguson reportedly went cold on the idea of signing Sneijder because it would hamper the progress of highly-rated midfielder Pogba.
Manchester United boss Ferguson had earmarked Inter Milan and Holland star Sneijder as the perfect replacement for Paul Scholes, who retired earlier this summer.
But the Red Devils supremo reckons 18-year-old Pogba has what it takes to be every bit as good as the Dutchman.
Ferguson said: "The young boy Pogba is showing great promise.
"We are quite positive about him. If we hold him back, what is going to happen? He will leave in a couple of years' time when his contract has finished.
"We have to give him the opportunity to see how he will do in the first team. He has great ability. He has the physique and athleticism."
