Arsene Wenger will summon his most trusted talent scout to the Arsenal training ground on Sunday and ask him for a final verdict on Gary Cahill.
The 'Mirror' reported that Chief scout Steve Rowley watched the Bolton Wanderers centre-back in action against QPR and will surely tell his boss that Cahill is made for the Gunners.
In fact, the goal Cahill despatched to set Bolton on their biggest away win for six years was good enough to grace the Emirates or any other home of Champions League football.
Arsenal are well aware there’s a get-out clause in Cahill’s current contract which values him at around £16.5 million.
Cash-rich from the impending departures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri, a move for Cahill makes absolute sense.
Wenger has been searching for a new central defender for months. Cahill is the clear favourite and has moved ahead of Blackburn’s Chris Samba.
Bolton boss Owen Coyle recognises the impressive qualities of his England international defender and enthused about the way he curled a right-foot shot into the top corner from 25 yards.
Coyle said: “Gary is good enough to play for anybody. He has the feet of a centre-forward as well as his ability to defend.
“It was a wonderful goal. We got the platform then to express ourselves.”
Coyle insisted there had been no firm offer for Cahill. That is certain to come in the next week but Coyle can feel at ease with the potential loss because of the back-up in his squad.
“I am thrilled to have come here and won,” said Coyle, savouring Bolton’s biggest away win for six years.
“This was always going to be a difficult game and we knew we would have to withstand pressure in the early part of the game.”
Even Rangers boss Neil Warnock saw fit to salute the Cahill wonder goal.
He said: “Give credit where it’s due, Cahill tool his goal really well. But I still maintain there’s things we can be pleased about. If we can get the two or three players we need we’ll be all right.”
