Disgraced striker Carlos Tevez had been prevented from travelling to Argentina to attend Manchester City’s investigation into his refusal to play for the club, according to several British newspaper reports.

Tevez had appeared to seek an escape route after stunning the football world by apparently refusing to come on as a substitute during Manchester City’s 2-0 defeat against Bayern Munich in a Champions League clash on Tuesday.

Tevez and his family had tickets for a flight out of Manchester on Friday evening but the Argentine striker was told he is needed at the Etihad Stadium on Monday for the inquiry into the shameful incident.

City’s Abu Dhabi owners are fully behind manager Roberto Mancini as they explore what punishment to mete out to Tevez beyond the two-week suspension.

Some reports suggested that Tevez could lose up to £2 million if found guilty of refusing to play for City or have his contract terminated.

City have turned out down a loan move to West Ham for the unhappy Argentine star but wealthy Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala is also offering him another escape route. They have already shocked the game by bringing in Samuel Eto’o on a contract worth £340,000 a week after tax.

But Tevez’s first hurdle will be Monday inquiry into his behaviour at Bayern Munich, with both the club and player having legal representation.

So much so that the club has sought lip-reading experts to analyse footage of the incident at Allianz Arena before deciding to hand out maximum punishment to Tevez.

The ‘Daily Mail’ revealed that lipreading experts say that at one point, when approached by a member of the City backroom staff, Tevez appears to say, ‘No, leave me alone. I’ve said no,’ followed by an expletive (https://bit.ly/n0ar8H).

In another excerpt, Tevez seems to say: ‘Well, who cares, I’m not going to. I’ve said I’m not.’
