Arsene Wenger is emerging as a hot favourite to replace Fabio Capello as England manager after the Euro 2012 Finals.

Italian Capello has said he will leave the post after the Euro 2012 finals in Ukraine and Poland.

With plans already under way to find a suitable successor, Wenger's name has been thrown into the hat especially after comments he made to a French newspaper during the weekend that he would be considering his future at the end of the season.

Although calls to appoint an Englishman after Capello has been gaining currency, Wenger's experience in the Premier League would offset that.

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp was the red-hot favourite but there are doubts about him within the FA due to his ill health and his tax evasion trial in January.

He returned to the Spurs dugout on Monday night after heart surgery three weeks ago.

But senior figures at the FA want Wenger as the next England manager, Express Sport reported.

Frenchman Wenger has backing from unnamed influential figures within English football’s governing body with a source telling Express Sport: “Arsene’s name has come up in discussions. It would be strange if it hadn’t. He is an internationally respected manager with a wonderful track record.”

Although Wenger only recently said he would never coach England as he believes the job should be done by an Englishman, the FA believe they could make it happen.

His contract at Arsenal expires in 2014, but at the weekend Wenger said: “We will see at the end of the season how far we can go. We still have some way to go to show we are on the right track.”
