Tottenham will have to bear the agony of missing out on Champions League qualification to their bitter north London rivals Arsenals but also lose their best players this summer.

Spurs will have a tough battle to keep striker Luka Modric who is being targeted by Manchester United and Chelsea.

Real Madrid also want to land the Tottenham midfield star for £25 million, it has been reported.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy blocked a £40 million bid for Modric from Chelsea last summer.

Modric has expressed his desire to leave White Hart Lane and newly crowned Premier League champions City have also shown interest in him.

Harry Redknapp saw his campaign disintegrating during the latter part of the season after being a contender for the title at one stage.

There is more bad news for Spurs as German giants Schalke are lining up a £12 million bid for Rafael van der Vaart.

The ex-Real Madrid ace is top of the Bundesliga club’s summer wishlist after their star striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar demanded they sign his Dutch mate, according to The Sun.

Huntelaar has been offered a new deal to stay but refused to commit his future to Schalke unless they pursued the Tottenham hitman, it said.

Schalke are prepared to pay Van der Vaart in excess of £100,000 a week.

Van der Vaart, 29, has become disillusioned at White Hart Lane after frequently being substituted by Redknapp after 70 minutes.

And his wife Sylvie is spending four days a week out of the country.

By a cruel twist of fate, Chelsea winning the Champions League title deprived Spurs of playing in Europe.
