Modric snub puts Sneijder back in Man Utd sights

Fergie has little choice but to chase the Dutch playmaker

Luka Modric is increasingly resembling a mirage for Manchester United.

The more available he seems to become, the further away he seems to go.

The noises coming out of Old Trafford seem to suggest that Sir Alex Ferguson is definitely in the market for a midfield general.

Yes, Paul Scholes will do the job as and when required, but Scholes is very much in a holding role right now – typically – holding it all together till United find the right playmaker.

Manchester City’s success because of Yaya Toure will only serve to heighten the lack of that kind of title-winning midfield impact at United.

Sure there is Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher will return. And Anderson will eventually find his feet.

Until then, Luka Modric would have been the perfect fit.

However, Fergie’s open praise of Modric has done little to move the talented Croatian any closer to Manchester… the Red section at least.

At the Euros, the talk has been of the Croat getting ready to move from Tottenham Hotspur to Spain.

Which sends Fergie back to the drawing board.

And the figure that stands out on that board is Wesley Sneijder.

It is not clear why Fergie did not move for Sneijder at the beginning of last season.

However, with an early let-off at the Euros, where the Dutch playmaker was one of the few who came out of the debacle with his spurs intact, Sneijder might be back on the table again.

Inter Milan will certainly consider an offer especially if Sneijder is interested in leaving.

Without a strong playmaker, United could once again be left wanting in trying to wrest the title back from City.

New signing Kagawa could cancel out David Silva. But what is United’s answer to Yaya Toure?

Modric? Or, Wesley Sneijder.
