Joey Barton was last night on the verge of joining QPR - but is still hopeful of a last-minute offer from Newcastle.

He said on Twitter: "I'm going for a medical now. Still no contract offer from Newcastle. Think that just about makes my mind up.”

The Toon midfielder, 28, wants to stay in the North East but has not been given a contract extension.

Barton was transfer-listed after a bust-up with Toon boss Alan Pardew.

"I'll talk to QPR because Newcastle don't want me. I don't want to leave."

After sealing a £35m takeover, new QPR majority shareholder Tony Fernandes is keen to make Barton his first signing in a bank-busting deal.

Lotus F1 chief Fernandes has promised manager Neil Warnock £10m for squad strengthening.

Chief executive Philip Beard said: "We are confident our supporters will help make Loftus Road a fortress on matchdays."
