Number of drug cases up by 17% this year

The number of people involved in drug cases in Dubai during the first 10 months of 2011 rose 14.4 per cent to 1,023 from 894 during the corresponding period of last year.

Meanwhile, the number of recorded drug cases increased 17 per cent to 740 from 632 during the periods under comparison.

But the quantity of drugs seized decreased 77 per cent to 230kg during the first 10 months of 2011 compared to 1005kg during the corresponding period of 2010.

According to statistics of the Anti-Narcotics Department of Dubai Police, of the people caught in drug cases 398 people were from the Gulf countries, 226 from other Arabs nations and 399 foreigners.

At least 424 people were charged with drug abuse, 312 were charged with possession of drugs and 152 were charged with bringing in drugs. About 95 suspects were charged with promoting drugs, 32 were charged with drug trafficking and seven were charged with importing drugs while one was charged with drug cultivation.

The drugs seized during the first 10 months of this year included 24kg hashish, 100kg of heroin, 14 seeds of marijuana, 34kg of cocaine, 2kg of Clio crack narcotic substance and 140,267 of narcotic pills.
