More than 37,000 road accidents killed 3,971 people over four years in the UAE, maintaining its position has having one of the world’s worst traffic records.

The accidents were a result of speed and other road offences, which totalled a whopping 19.5 million during 2006-2009, according to the Ministry of Interior.

Speed appeared to be the main killer among UAE road users as it accounted for nearly 67 per cent of the total offences, the Ministry said in a recent report presented to the Federal National Council (GCC).

Although they form less than a fifth of the country’s total population, Emiratis accounted for nearly a fourth of the total road casualties as 889 of them were killed in crashes during that period, showed the report, which was published by the Dubai-based Arabic language daily Emarat Alyoum.

It showed the accidents during that period resulted in the injury of nearly 45,500 people, including 11,280 Emiratis.

Other main offences included reckless driving, jumping the red lights, driving in the wrong direction, sudden move to another lane and negligence.
