Expatriates seeking a new visa or renewal of their existing residence in Sharjah must have a national identity card when a link-up plan is enforced at the beginning of December, newspapers reported on Tuesday.

The Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA) said it had completed a project to link the national ID to the issuing of a new visa or renewal of existing residence, adding that nine registration centres had been opened at preventive medicine departments through the emirate.

“Procedures to have a new visa issued or renew the residence will be linked to the ID from December 1,” it said in a statement carried by local newspapers.

EIDA said it had already enforced such measures in Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujeirah as part of plans to link the ID to visa in all UAE emirates by the end of 2011.
