Pakistanis and Indians emerged as motorists most involved in fatal accidents in Dubai in the first seven months of 2013, causing accidents that resulted in 43 deaths, according to Dubai Police.

Emiratis were the third-most reckless motorists as they were involved in accidents that killed 17 people during the period.

Figures by the Dubai Traffic Police showed Pakistani drivers were involved in 198 mishaps in the emirate, resulting in 23 deaths.

Indian drivers caused 187 accidents that killed 20 people, while Emiratis were involved in 172 road mishaps.

“Pakistanis, Indians and Emiratis were responsible for nearly 60 per cent of total road casualties,” Dubai Traffic Police Chief Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen said.

He said drivers from these three nationalities alone committed 575 road accidents out of the total 891 mishaps during that period.

He said drivers from Bangladesh were involved in 44 accidents that killed five people, followed by Egyptians who were responsible for 43 road crashes resulting in four deaths.

“These figures are really shocking as they are opposed to our strategy to cut road deaths to below one per cent by 2020,” he said.

There is a 95 per cent increase in fatal traffic accidents during the first seven months of this year.
