'BlackBerry' affair puts teens in jail

A court in Ras Al Khaimah sentenced an 18-year-old Arab boy and his girl-friend, 16, to three months in prison and ordered their deportation from the UAE after they were convicted of committing adultery, newspapers reported on Wednesday.

The girl told court she had known her friend via BlackBerry, began chatting and ran away from her home after her mother discovered the relationship and threatened her.

She said her friend let her stay at a married friend’s house as he lives with his family, adding that her mother reported her to the police two weeks after she fled.

The defence lawyer said he would appeal the sentence on the grounds the criminal law does not apply to the boy as he was under 18 years when he was involved in that affair and his girl friend fled home.
