China to International City via Jebel Ali: Drug bust

A Chinese businesswoman allegedly smuggled 2,000 Tramadol tablets into the UAE via a shipping container with the aim to sell them in the country, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

An anti-narcotics officer testified that information was given by Dubai Customs about a suspicious container in Jebel Ali port and the identity of the consignee.

IW, 45, was asked to collect the consignment, but as she claimed she could not, she was offered a delivery service. So she gave her shop address in International City, where she was arrested upon receiving the goods.

The accused admitted to smuggling in Tramadol tablets which she had been sent by a doctor in China to sell in the UAE.

In similar case, a Pakistani waiter is accused of smuggling and possessing 23.5kg of heroin hidden in 2,999 capsules for sale through Jebel Ali Port.

The drugs were hidden in furniture boxes which were opened in front of the representatives of the shipping company.

Police found out that the recipient had rented a room in Abu Dhabi for storing the shipped furniture. The consignment was sealed again with the drugs and was sent to the accused.WS,

The court will reconvene for both cases on September 29.
