Bollywood's Bachchans have the Blues, but is Aishwarya Chelsea?

Manchester United have a problem. Bollywood’s first family – the Bachchans are not Red Devils.

What started out, like most Indian football support for Premier League clubs, as a fad seems to have developed into a serious obssession.

Abhishek Bachchan and  Amitabh Bachchan are now die-hard Chelsea supporters. Not really now as in ‘now’, but now as in now on Twitter publicly avowing their fascination and love for the Roman Abramovich’s Stamford Bridge Blues.

While most fans of Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan will know that her hubby, Abhishek , has been a Blues fan for some time, Small B has now managed to turn the Big B into a major supporter as well.

Abhishek introduced Amitabh Bachchan to the beautiful game when the two cheer for Chelsea against Tottenham. In an interview he said, "I had been to the Chelsea matches several times. But it was the first time for Pa. And I was excited, both by the thought of attending my favourite team’s match and by the fact that my dad was so excited. We had ourselves a ball."

Reportedly wife Aishwarya Rai had also accompanied them.

"I think I've converted dad to a football fan", said Abhishek.

Evident from this recent tweet from Amitabh Bachchan‏@SrBachchan recently: “T 1043 -Back home !! Took a while longer to land .. charter jets are always in cue if airport is busy .. missed the ManU v Chelsea game, but ... but .. just caught up with analysis of game and happy to know after being 0-2, Chelsea ended at 2-2 .. our goals were superior”.

Really? Superior? Those kind of comments only come to fans who are truly blinded by their support for a team.

Imagine watching the match with Amitabh Bachchan and him going: “That curved ball goal was exquisite !! CHEELLLSSEEEEAAAA !!!”

Well that is what he tweeted.

So while the Khans might have their cricket – Salman with his patronage of the Celebrity Cricket League and Shah Rukh Khan’s undying commitment to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Indian Premier League, the Bachchans have decided to back the beautiful game it seems.

Which, if the football officials of the country are smart to latch on to, could turn into some great brand support for the game in India as they desperately try to catch up with the might of cricket.

Rafa Benitez, the under-fire Chelsea coach, however, can take some respite from the Bachchan support.

As can Frank Lampard.

After all if Abhishek tweets “Lampard you legend!!! #200” ‏@juniorbachchan, he could only possibly upset the thousands of die-hard Manchester United supporters who exist in India.
