Relationships can be complicated. Romantic relationships even more so. And if it's one in Bollywood, you'd never really know what to expect the next day.

Being friends with your ex has always been taboo, but here's an exception in Bollywood that might bend the rules a bit - Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor.

The 'ultra-professional' ex-lovers-turned-friends are now great co-stars and have proved all theories wrong. Why should we consider their formula right? Simple, 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' is still reaping gold at the box office.

When relationship ends, one of the partners, or both, are in a state of bitterness and this can lead to some weird and rather ugly outbursts and rage (think Aishwarya Rai and Salman Khan or Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor).

But, they can also separate their past love-life and still go home smiling with a bigger bank balance.

Here are three ways to to deal exes in B-town:

Ranbir-Deepika Way:

Well, let's rewind the scene for all the uninitiated. Actor Ranbir Kapoor walked into the industry hand-in-hand with Deepika Padukone in 2008 and together they dreamt of a "happily ever-after".

Ranbir was soon linked with virtually with every girl while Deepika got his his intitials 'RK' inked. Deepika's discomfort grew, making the much-in-love girlfriend insecure and unsettled. The final straw in break-up was his sneaking-out act with Katrina Kaif.

The break-up wasn't pretty, with Deepika calling Ranbir a 'cheater' on television and blatantly displaying the tattoo (RK) that became a symbol of betrayal.

However, after this much history and mystery, the two buried their past, becoming co-stars for Ayaan Mukherjee's 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani'. The movie was an instant hit even before the release. The chemistry between the exes is crackling, proving that they will not let matters of the heart come in the way of career.

The Salman-Aishwarya Way

This love story takes prime spot in Bollywood's book of love and hate relationships. Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai (now Bachchan) began dating in 1999, while shooting for 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam'.

By March 2002, they had an ugly breakup. Aishwarya accused Salman of abusing her. Reports claimed that Salman, unable to accept the break-up, had started harassing and hounding and even threatening Aishwarya.

He apparently even slapped a journalist once for asking him questions about Aishwarya.

Their relationship ended on a turbulent note and even after 10 years they don't see eye-to-eye. Each has moved on; one married has a little kid and the other reached superstardom but they still take calculative measures to avoid bumping into each other.

Not that their separation affected their individual careers (not Salman's for sure) but their bitterness is too unpleasantness to swallow.

While Salman can still be good friends with another ex-Katrina Kaif and give one of biggest hits of 2012, we wonder what will take to see Salman-Ash share screen-space (forever?).

Hence a Salman-Aishwarya specimen only sees audience lose out on experiencing the chemistry between one of the most beautiful couples on-screen.

The Shahid-Kareena Option

It was the one of longest relationships that Bollywood has seen, and a break-up that stumped many within the industry. But Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor have always been civilised about their separation.

She fell for Saif Ali Khan during the shoot of 'Omkara', leaving Shahid completely heartbroken. Took him few months to recover and go on a dating spree.

However, post the break-up released their first and one of the biggest hits of their careers 'Jab We Met'.

Kareena went on record to say, "Shahid and I can never have any bad blood."

When Kareena tied the knot with Saif, a very callous reporter asked Shahid about his thoughts. Shahid gave a dignified reply wishing Saif and Kareena well.

And though there is a very lean chance that they would star opposite each other, we would like to see that 'Jab We Met' spark once again!

Since we do not see any enemity even after heart-break we keep our hopes alive.
