She’s known for her outrageous fashion statements, but Lady Gaga went one step further this weekend, appearing at the MTV Video Music Awards in a dress apparently made entirely of raw meat.
The controversial singer wore the peek-a-boo dress to collect her Video Of The Year award from Cher and admitted it was difficult to walk in. “This outfit's too heavy to walk in. I apologise if I'm a little slow this evening,” she said.
Thankfully, Cher, whom Gaga embraced, didn’t turn her nose up, either at any smell or perceived ickiness – leading to speculation that the dress was actually fake. Either way, it was a powerful statement on our meat-eating culture.
Gaga shocked fans and environment lovers last week when she appeared on the cover of Vogue Hommes Japan wearing a meat swimsuit.
Ingrid Newkirk, President of animal rights body People for Ethical Treatment to Animals, said in a statement: “Lady Gaga's job is to do outlandish things, and this certainly qualifies as outlandish because meat is something you want to avoid putting on or in your body".
Gaga also wore two other dresses to the MTV VMAs, arriving on the red carpet in a flowing regal Alexander McQueen outfit of gold, orange and green and in a pair of the late designer’s trademark 12-inch Armadillo shoes.
After the show, talk show host queen Ellen DeGeneres gave Gaga a "veggie bikini" inspired by the Vogue cover during the taping of the Season 8 Premiere of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show". The episode airs today in the United States and is expected to air this week in the UAE.
