A driver who ran over and killed a pedestrian at 3.30am in Dubai on Saturday and sped away without contacting police or ambulance, has been arrested.

Police identified the driver as MAA, a 26-year-old Arab national, and the victim as MFA, Bangladeshi, aged 51.

Major-General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, Director of Criminal Investigation, Dubai Police, said the breaking of the car’s glass and falling off of the car’s right mirror helped arrest the culprit in less than 20 hours.

Al Mansouri said police rushed to the site after the operations room received information about the accident.

The body of the victim was found at the site of the accident. There was blood on the right mirror of the vehicle.

Police then launched a search for a car whose windshield was broken and right mirror missing.

Col Ali Ahmed Ghanem, Director of Bur Dubai police station, said the defendant claimed that his car had not run over any one. He claimed that bricks or stones loaded on a truck must have fallen on the dead person.

Colonel Ghanem added that the accused was sent to a forensic lab for an alcohol test.

He called on drivers who get involved in accidents to call the police and ambulance and not to escape from the scene. An ambulance may be able to save the life of the accident victim, he added.

Also, the driver will have to face the additional charge of escaping from the scene of an accident after being involved in it.
