Why buy a wedding dress in Dubai? Because Dubai fills this bride with warmth and happiness

My friend Sana is getting married in December in Phuket. She is Tunisian, he is Pakistani, and she was flying through Dubai from Lisbon for two days to find her wedding dress. I am the head of the dress committee, which means I do the research, map the routes, call the shops and build the itinerary. Three days before she landed, I started calling bridal boutiques to book appointments. August, I assumed, would be easy. I was wrong. Nearly every boutique was fully booked. I had to beg to squeeze her in. August in the Gulf used to mean slow. That was the old calendar. Dubai Summer Surprises, launched in 1998, was designed to solve that problem, and twenty-nine editions later, the answer is settled. This summer, the Great Dubai Summer Sale reported a surge in mall footfall, with retailers recording sales increases of more than 30 per cent. Residents returning from holidays, back-to-school shopping, and sixty days of promotions and entertainment turned what used to be the city's quietest stretch into one of its busiest. The bridal boutiques did not get their bookings from any of that. They run on a different clock entirely. A wedding set for December was decided months ago. A gown needs fittings, alterations, weeks of lead time. The customers are residents, tourists, and a global clientele that orders remotely. On our last day, I realised I had left the Pakistani bridal outfit off the itinerary entirely. I had suggested that all eight of us, Sana's squad, wear Pakistani outfits to the wedding to honour Ameer's family, so we headed to Bur Dubai to find the bride's first. The lanes of Meena Bazaar were packed. Raj, who works at one of the shops, spent hours with us, walking the bride through fabrics, customs, and colours we were not familiar with. When I asked how business was during summer, he showed us custom orders being shipped to customers in the United States, Indian and Pakistani outfits commissioned by phone and WhatsApp from buyers who had never visited the souk. Business, he said, was strong. Wholesale and retail trade is Dubai's largest economic sector, accounting for 22 per cent of GDP and generating AED 50.9 billion in the first quarter of 2026 alone, a quarter in which the economy grew 2.4 per cent. Somewhere inside that number sits an industry that almost nobody measures: bridal. Sana and Ameer’s wedding will use more of the UAE’s infrastructure than its shops. Before Phuket, they plan to formalise their marriage in Abu Dhabi, where around 53,000 civil marriages between foreign nationals have been registered since the emirate introduced its civil marriage system in 2021. In Dubai, couples can obtain a civil marriage licence within 24 hours. A Tunisian bride and a Pakistani groom can formalise their union in one emirate, shop for both traditions in another, and celebrate on a beach in a third country, with every element of the supply chain running through the UAE. Sana flies to Milan every six weeks. She could have searched there, or in Lisbon, or anywhere in Europe. She chose Dubai. When I asked why, her answer had nothing to do with price. She wanted to feel joy in the moment she found her dress, she said, and Dubai gave her exactly that, in the warmth, the service, the flexibility to alter and reorder, and the feeling that the city itself was involved in her happiness and made her feel special. She found both dresses in two days. Mission accomplished. Dubai did not set out to build a wedding capital. It built 154,000 hotel rooms, an airline network that by June was already carrying five million passengers a month and connecting 217 destinations across 99 countries, gold souks, textile districts, civil registries, and couture boutiques. The wedding economy assembled itself from those parts, the way an ecosystem forms when the conditions are right. That is the kind of infrastructure the world tends to overlook, a city so thoroughly built that industries emerge from it without ever being planned. The rest of the squad, eight girls scattered between UAE, Canada, UK, France and Tunisia, still need their Pakistani outfits for Phuket. I told them to message Raj.
