The Dubai Moving Image Museum, the only one of its kind in the world focusing on the prehistory of Cinema, has been nominated in the ‘Best Emerging Culture Destination Middle East’ category, to win a ‘museum Oscar’ at the Leading Culture Destinations Awards 2015.

The museum, which was inaugurated by Sheikh Majid Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, in January 2014, is a strong contender amongst this year’s shortlisted Middle East institutions. All of which will be competing for the ‘Best Emerging Culture Destination Middle East’ title and Oscar, at the London-based award ceremony on October 9, 2015.

Akram Miknas, collector and founder of the Dubai Moving Image Museum, commented, “It is an honour for the Dubai Moving Image Museum to have been shortlisted for a ‘museum Oscar’ at the Leading Culture Destinations Awards 2015. We are extremely proud that the museum’s uniqueness and contemporary approach has been recognised.”

Housing Mr. Miknas’ private collection of over 300 unique artefacts accumulated over thirty-five years, the Dubai Moving Image Museum showcases the progression of science and the art of entertainment, exhibiting the chronological development of visual art - from the earliest days of shadow theatres to the invention of 3D and the birth of modern-day cinema.

All of the items on display are originals, dating back from the 1720’s to the twentieth century. Featuring numerous interactive aspects, visitors of all ages are able to experience the history of the moving image on offer at the museum.

The Leading Culture Destinations Awards, dubbed as the ‘Oscars for Museums’, celebrate the most exceptional existing and emerging cultural destinations and the museums on offer, as well as celebrating creativity and innovation in the sector. The Awards Ceremony will be held in London on October 9, 2015 at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower.

The Dubai Moving Image Museum is located in Tecom minutes away from the Internet City Metro station and is directly off the Sheikh Zayed Road. Open every day, expect Fridays, from 11am-6pm. Admission is Dh50 for adults (18 years+), and Dh25 for children (18 years and under) and students with valid ID.
