Emirates SkyCargo expands freighter fleet with converted Boeing 777-300ER

Dubai: Emirates SkyCargo has added a converted Boeing 777-300ER Special Freighter (777-300ERSF) to its growing cargo fleet, enhancing its ability to support global trade and meet rising demand for air freight services. The aircraft, registered A6-EBK, has already entered commercial service and is transporting cargo across multiple markets through and to Dubai. Unlike Emirates SkyCargo's factory-built freighters, the aircraft was converted from a Boeing 777-300ER passenger aircraft previously operated by Emirates. From passenger aircraft to freighter The conversion involved a comprehensive redesign of the aircraft to transform it into a dedicated cargo platform capable of handling large freight shipments while maintaining operational safety and performance standards. The process required extensive modifications to the aircraft's fuselage, flooring, cargo handling systems, avionics and environmental control systems. As part of the conversion, all passenger interiors, including seats, overhead compartments, galleys and lavatories, were removed to create space for cargo operations. A large main-deck cargo door was installed, requiring significant structural reinforcement and the replacement of sections of the fuselage to accommodate large cargo pallets. A rigid safety barrier capable of withstanding forces of up to nine times gravity (9G) was also installed at the front of the main deck, consistent with regulatory requirements for freighter aircraft. Reinforced cargo handling systems To support heavy freight loads, the aircraft's original passenger floor structure was removed and replaced with reinforced floor beams designed for cargo operations. A full cargo loading system featuring powered rollers, guides and locking mechanisms was installed to facilitate the movement and secure transport of large cargo units. The conversion also included advanced cargo monitoring systems, smoke detection equipment and fire suppression systems to enhance safety during operations. Supporting specialised cargo The aircraft has been equipped to support Emirates SkyCargo's portfolio of time- and temperature-sensitive cargo products, including pharmaceuticals and healthcare shipments. Its environmental control systems were adapted to provide precise monitoring and management of airflow, ventilation and temperature, supporting cargo that requires controlled conditions throughout transit. Additional electrical and operational systems were also modified to meet the requirements of cargo transportation. Certification and testing Before entering service, the aircraft underwent extensive documentation reviews, ground testing and flight evaluations to obtain regulatory certification. The approval process confirmed compliance with safety requirements covering structural integrity, systems reliability, fire protection and flight performance. The aircraft also received Emirates SkyCargo's latest livery before its first commercial flight. Growing cargo capacity Emirates SkyCargo currently serves more than 150 destinations across six continents and continues to expand its freighter fleet to support global supply chains. Since March 2026, the carrier has taken delivery of six Boeing 777F production freighters, in addition to the converted Boeing 777-300ERSF. The airline expects to receive a further four Boeing 777F freighters and one additional converted freighter later this year. According to Emirates SkyCargo, the additional capacity will provide customers with greater flexibility while supporting the growing demand for international cargo transportation, including e-commerce shipments and other cross-border trade flows.
