Sheikha Latifa bint Hamdan: Remembering a life of service and giving

Whenever I hear the name of my grandmother, Sheikha Latifa bint Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, wife of the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, I am reminded of a remarkable woman whose name opens the door to conversations about humanity, service and altruism. I think of the mother who instilled in my father a deep sense of humanity and love for people, and of the woman who was loved by the people of Dubai and admired by generations of women across the country. In Dubai’s collective memory, Sheikha Latifa was a mother, a grandmother and a source of support and comfort for the city’s women; she helped shape decisions that served her family, women and society as a whole, drawing on her closeness to the people and her deep understanding of their needs. I came across a document dated 16 May 1981, issued by the British Embassy in the UAE following British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's visit to the country on 22 and 23 April that year. Reading it gave me a new perspective on this extraordinary woman and the impact she had beyond our family. The document records Margaret Thatcher’s request for detailed information about my grandmother, Sheikha Latifa bint Hamdan, following a private meeting between them at Rashid Tower. She made a far-reaching contribution to public life while valuing her privacy and remaining outside the public eye. Her majlis, where she welcomed women from every family and all spheres of Dubai’s society, became a space for connection, serving as a bridge through which women’s voices and the needs of Dubai’s families could reach Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed. Her closeness to the people and intimate understanding of their lives enabled her to offer thoughtful recommendations that responded to their needs and improved their quality of life. The document reveals how she prioritised the care of People of Determination and the empowerment of women, particularly through education and healthcare, while giving special attention to those who needed support most; it also records her frequent visits to citizens’ homes to understand their living conditions. Her recommendations helped shape housing programmes across the emirate. Her humanitarian work also reached beyond the nation’s borders to countries including Nepal, Egypt and Pakistan, alongside her contribution to the development of Great Ormond Street Hospital in the United Kingdom. Today, as I bring together these two portraits, the woman whose memory lived in our family conversations and my father’s recollections and the public figure described in the document, I see more clearly how deeply a person’s environment shapes who they become. My grandmother Sheikha Latifa grew up as the granddaughter of Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan (Zayed the First) and became the wife of Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum. She went on to become the mother of Dubai’s rulers, known for their love of the people, their accessibility, and their deep bond with the nation. The document’s account of the close relationship she shared with her son, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and of their shared commitment to society shows how a mother’s influence can flow through her children and touch the lives of people across the nation. Within this environment, she became an active presence and a practical leader, always seeking ways to serve the people. Prepared as a confidential communication for the British government, the document offers a private account of a woman of great historical significance, whose influence was deeply felt across the land, in human connections and in the lives of the people. Its original purpose gives its observations particular meaning and authenticity. From my grandmother Sheikha Latifa, I learned that the true measure of a life lies in service and in the lives it touches, that gentleness can carry great strength, and that giving is the truest and most beautiful expression of love. She loved Dubai and its people, and from that love she shaped a steadfast approach to life, devoted to serving a community she regarded as her extended family. I also learned from her that every woman can leave an extraordinary mark on her society while remaining true to her identity, and that this influence deepens when her efforts and love for her homeland are sincere. Sheikha Latifa will remain a woman whose enduring legacy spans generations. In my memory, my grandmother will always embody a world of love and generosity, of quiet strength and boundless giving, and of a life dedicated to the people she held so close to her heart.
