The Mafraq Hospital in Abu Dhabi on Sunday announced the launch of a specialised children's injury prevention programme accredited by the American Academy of Paediatrics.

As part of the programme, the Mafraq Hospital's Paediatrics department will run the highly praised PedFACTS (Pediatric First Aid for Caregivers and Teachers) training course, certifying up to 150 parents, nannies, housekeepers and teachers across the UAE in life-saving techniques including the Heimlich Manoeuvre (to prevent choking), Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, and child car safety seat installation and use.

"The numbers speak for themselves and should give everyone pause," said Dr. Taisser Atrak, Chairman of Paediatrics at Mafraq Hospital. Mafraq Hospital is bringing a unique and potentially life-saving programme to the UAE".

According to Dr. Mohammad Yaman, Chief Medical Officer at Mafraq Hospital, fatal accidents in children are often those that could have been most easily prevented. He refers to complications from burn related injuries within the family home- a leading cause of injury in children aged one to four in the UAE.
