Ghazal artistes Bhupinder and Mitali Singh will be in Dubai this weekend to mesmerise the audience with a wonderful musical night. Organised by Heart and Soul Events, the concert, 'Do Deewane Shaher Mein', will bring alive some of the husband-wife team's much-loved and famous compositions on September 28, at Emirates International School, near Sheikh Zayed Road.

Recently, the couple celebrated the silver jubilee of their professional partnership with the release of their new album 'Aksar'. Those attending the concert will be fortunate to hear the famous duo perform a few compositions from the latest album.

Speaking to Emirates 24|7, Mitali Singh expressed her joy and anticipation about performing in Dubai. She also spoke about her life and singing partner Bhupinder and why Ghazal should recieve more exposure. Here are some of the excerpts of the interview.

Concert in Dubai -  'Do Deewane Shaher Mein'

The title of the show "Do Deewane Shaher Mein" is from a very popular song sung by Bhupinder for 'Gharaonda' and the line is apt for the two of us (read: Bhupinder and Mitali). We are the only couple in India who have been singing together for the past 25 years and we recently celebrated our silver jubilee on stage. It's a pleasure to come to Dubai because this emirate gives so much love and affection. Anita Pai and Heart & Soul has done a tremendous job of organising this concert. We always love to come to Dubai because there are excellent listeners here who are passionate about Ghazal. Our audiences inspire us a lot.

Professional relationship

Bhupinder ji is a legend. When he started his career with 'Hakikat' song he was hardly 17 years old. When I met him he was already a school in himself. All the compositions that we perofrm on, are done by 'Bhupi' (Bhupinder). We always exchange ideas, contemplate and argue as well when we work alongside each other.

He has inspired me to compose. He pushed me and believed in me to do things, which even I didn't realise I could do. As a partner I gained a lot from him. The authority that I show over a composition with him, I don't think I can do the same with anyone else.

Association with poet and lyricist Gulzar

Gulzar Saab and Bhupi share a different equation. He blindly loves Bhupi and their relationship goes way back. Sometimes I get jealous of the beautiful lyrics he pen downs for Bhupi. So he gave me a nazam (poetry) and said people will remember you because you will sing on behalf of womanhood.

After he gave me the nazam, I was speechless. Gulzar Saab is like family. When he meets Bhupi, more than a poet, they meet as brothers.

Hindi cinema and Ghazals

Indian cinema has been changing over the years and with every change there is something postive as well as negative. As far as movies are concerned, it has got its boundaries because it is situational and story-based. In the story lines that we have today, I don't see any situation for a Ghazal. Our music directors are very talented who can deliver when needed.

Another point I would like to mention here is the role of marketing. Nowadays, item numbers sell, and only these item numbers are being promoted. Everybody promotes what sells. Ghazal can never die but maybe the marketing situation is bad. There are so many talented singers in India that Ghazal can never die.

Television reality shows

There are two ways to look at it - with reality shows, people who had no clue about singing or people with limited options are getting exposure all over the world. One good point for a particular time period. After that they keep singing the same old songs, what about their original songs? They should come out with their compositions with the channels. New talents only vie for playback singing for movies. But why not come out with non-film songs? Channels producing such reality shows should promote the artists, launch them with albums and take care of them once the reality show gets over. They should nurture these talented youngsters and not just earn profit out of the reality shows.
