Snooker star O'Sullivan unhurt in crash following final defeat

Snooker star Ronnie O'Sullivan walked away from a car accident with his six-year-old son Ronnie Jr unhurt, just hours after losing the World Championship final against Mark Selby in Sheffield, the BBC said.

The five-time world champion, 38, and his boy were travelling in a two-seater Audi sports car when they lost control on the M1 motorway just outside Leicester at approximately 1.30 (0030 GMT) in the morning.

Sullivan conceded his world crown for the first time in three years just hours earlier when he lost a dramatic final 18-14 against fellow Englishman Selby, who ironically hails from Leicester.

A police spokeswoman told Britain's Press Association: "We would not identify those involved in a road traffic collision but we did have a crash on the M1 southbound at about 1.30 in the morning. There was an adult and a child in that vehicle."

O'Sullivan reportedly lost control of the Audi after hitting a pool of water and crashed into the central reservation before the pair scrambled from the vehicle being left "shaken".

They were heading back to O'Sullivan's home in Chigwell, Essex and were hit by bad weather conditions, although a source told the Daily Mirror that speed was not the cause of the crash.

O'Sullivan said after the final that he had "never been in such a good place" despite the defeat.

"He (Selby) outfought me, out-battled me and I've got no complaints. I fought my hardest," said O'Sullivan.
