Dubai: Dubai is a leading destination for high-quality healthcare in the region, and now, it’s making it easier for patients overseas to use its cutting-edge facilities. It’s all thanks to the new Smart Medical Visa.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new visa that creates a more integrated patient journey by linking residency and healthcare services in a seamless process.

What is the Smart Medical Visa?

Officially launched on June 3, 2026, the Smart Medical Visa simplifies medical visa processes for international patients, through a new partnership between the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs – Dubai (GDRFA) and the Dubai Health Authority (DHA).

Before the introduction of this visa, international patients arriving in Dubai for treatment had to navigate at least three separate areas simultaneously – acquiring an entry visa through the GDRFA, coordinating medical appointments via a DHA-licensed facility, and managing any visa extensions if the treatment extended for a longer period than originally planned. All of these steps involved different timelines, and plenty of paperwork.

The new Smart Medical Visa condenses these diverse tracks into a single, integrated pathway. Imran Khan, managing director at I K Lawyers, explained: “Under the earlier process, patients had to coordinate separately with hospitals, immigration authorities, and typing centers. Applications were manual, document heavy, and prone to delays. With the Smart Medical Visa, licensed UAE hospitals apply directly through the Smart System, and the visa is issued digitally. This hospital driven model reduces errors, eliminates multiple physical steps, and significantly speeds up processing.”

How does the Smart Medical Visa impact patients?

Patients are placed at the centre of the healthcare journey, thanks to the new visa. Here are some ways the Smart Medical Visa benefits patients:

  • It removes complex paperwork: With a simplified process, the visa helps in reducing administrative complexity and improving ease of access for international patients.
  • It offers digital integration: By reducing the number of separate processes, and related administrative hurdles, the new visa helps keep things simple and efficient, with its digital integration. Manish Jain, Deputy CEO, Aster Clinics UAE & Bahrain said: “Traditionally, international patients have had to coordinate visa applications, appointment scheduling, travel arrangements, treatment planning, and post-treatment follow-up through multiple channels. Greater connectivity between healthcare and immigration services creates a more seamless journey by reducing repetitive paperwork, simplifying approvals, and improving overall efficiency.”
  • It's convenient: With less time spent on paperwork, patients and their families can focus solely on treatment and care. This has huge value, as planned elective care, speed of service, and convenience are all factors that help improve patient experience.
  • It helps with medical treatment planning: The benefits of the visa begin long before the patient arrives in the UAE. Jain explained: “A more connected ecosystem enables healthcare providers to engage with patients and their families earlier, helping them plan their treatment journey with greater confidence and clarity. From initial consultations and treatment planning to travel support, admission arrangements, and ongoing communication, the experience becomes more coordinated, transparent, and patient-centric.”
  • It ensures the patient is supported throughout their treatment: The impact on continuity of care, is significant, as well. Jain said: “Digital integration supports better coordination across the entire treatment pathway, including pre-arrival consultations, in-person treatment, follow-up appointments, recovery monitoring, and ongoing clinical engagement after the patient returns home. This helps ensure that care is delivered as a continuous and connected journey rather than a series of isolated touchpoints, ultimately improving patient outcomes, convenience, confidence, and overall satisfaction.”

By bringing together healthcare providers, digital platforms, and government services, Dubai is creating an ecosystem that supports patients from their first consultation through treatment, recovery, and follow-up.

Things to consider about the Smart Medical Visa

According to the GDRFA website, here are the criteria to note when applying for a Smart Medical Visa:

  • The visa is issued to international patients for the purpose of medical treatment in the UAE.
  • The visa is a visit visa, and is valid for 90 or 180 days (single or multiple entry).
  • The sponsor/host must be a licenced healthcare facility in the UAE.
  • The escort of the patient may also be granted a visa. The escort should enter the UAE with the patient and hold a visa similar to the patient’s entry visa (one entry or multiple entry). Khan explained: “The Smart Medical Visa also allows companions to accompany the patient. Based on medical requirements, additional companions may be requested, and their visa duration will match the patient’s treatment period.”
  • The escort visa cannot be extended unless the patient’s visa is also being extended.
  • The beneficiary should have medical insurance.
  • A financial security deposit should be provided.
