Killer needs Dh30 million to stay alive

A convicted Saudi killer needs to pay SR30 million (Dh30 million) to save his life after he was sentenced to death for killing another local man during a fight.

Haleel Al Wabeeri must raise the funds within the next four months or he will be beheaded after he was convicted for murder.

His relatives said the victim’s family had agreed to pardon Wabeeri in exchange for SR30 million and that they had given them a four-month deadline.

“We appeal for all benevolent people to contribute to our drive to raise this sum,” Sultan Al Wabeeri said, quoted by Sabq newspaper.

Under Islamic law, which is strictly enforced in Saudi Arabia, a convicted killer can be saved from execution and walk free if pardoned by the victim’s relatives in return for diya (blood money).
