Dubai jails cabbie for groping waitress

An Asian taxi driver who stalked a waitress and touched her inappropriately has been sentenced to six months in jail.

Dubai Criminal Court has also ordered 28-year-old ZR, Pakistani, be deported after serving his sentence.

On April 10, 32-year-old AS, Russian, hailed the cab at about 4.30am from Sheikh Zayed Road as she missed her restaurant’s shuttle bus.

AS testified: “Upon arrival at my residence in International City’s Greek Cluster, I left the taxi with a bag in one hand and talking on my mobile using the other hand. As I was opening the door to the building, I felt someone touch me from behind. I turned to find the cabbie. Meanwhile, he touched me again.”

At the moment, the restaurant’s shuttle bus arrived and her co-workers disembarked. “Seeing them, he fled. One of them ran after him, but could not catch him,” she added.

AS informed police, who arrived immediately searched the area and found the cab parked about 25 meters away from the building.

“After sometime, ZR arrived gasping for breath.  He was wearing only his undershirt.”

The restaurant staff who ran after him, RM, 20, Syrian, also testified to seeing the cabbie touch his colleague inappropriately.
