An institute to provide yacht and leisure boat owners with licencing facilities and training in sailing is being planned by Maritime City Authority.

Captain Majid Al Shamsi, the institute's project manager, said: "This is the first institute of its kind in the region, which has been launched as part of our efforts to provide high-level services and facilities to meet the rapidly growing demands of the UAE's maritime sector.

"The institute is one of the highlights of Dubai Maritime City (DMC), and will ensure that the city is an integrated maritime centre at all levels."

The institute will support the development of the UAE's maritime sector by training and encouraging boat owners and users to adopt the highest safety standards. It will grant licences to boat owners, in addition to offering sailing courses to all those interested in sailing.

The Dubai Maritime City Campus, which will accommodate the institute, will comprise integrated state-of-the-art educational institutions that adopt the best international standards and offer easy sea access.

"Through the institute at the DMC, everyone in the UAE will have an opportunity to obtain a licence for sailing leisure boats and yachts," said Al Shamsi.

Dubai Maritime City has recently commenced the first phase of the project, which includes preparation and planning, with services expected to begin from June this year.
