Pink Caravan reaches Al Dhaid, Sharjah

Sheikh Khalid bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Department of Public Works and one of the Pink Caravan's ambassadors, led the Pink Caravan's riders in the first day of the ride, which kicked off from the Sharjah Equestrian and Racing Club in the emirate of Sharjah at 6:00 am.

The 18 riders completed a 35 kilometre horseback journey to Al Dhaid Hospital.

On the way to Al Dhaid, the caravan stopped at the Memorial in the emirate of Sharjah, located opposite the Sharjah Natural History Museum, and then in the Al Batayeh district where they were received with flowers and a warm welcome by the Chairman of the Municipality, members of the municipal council and a number of the district's residents.

Afterwards, the caravan headed to Al Dhaid Hospital and was received by the Director of the hospital accompanied by the medical personnel, the city's residents and a number of applicants for early breast cancer detection screening.

Commenting on the participation in the inaugural day of the Pink Caravan's trek, Sheikh Khalid bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Department of Public Works and one of the Pink Caravan's ambassadors, said: "Our participation in the Pink Caravan campaign is part of our belief that every member of community must take part in spreading public awareness and achieving humanitarian objectives, particularly as this campaign targets national and residents in all parts of the country. Therefore, it is incumbent upon us to intensify efforts to achieve these goals and to act as ambassadors in spreading awareness and raising funds to help treat cancer patients."

At the end of the first day, the Pink Caravan's riders met with medical and awareness teams, who were at Al Dhaid Hospital near the 2D mammogram clinic. Medical and awareness teams were also present at the University Dental Hospital in Sharjah.

The Pink Caravan will head from Al Dhaid to Masafi, while the medical teams will be at the Outlet Mall Dubai near the 2D mammogram clinic and at Dreamland in Umm Al Quwain.

Pink Caravan campaign will run annually until 2014, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah and under the directives of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs.

The Pink Caravan's ride starts in Sharjah on 5th of April and will culminate in Abu Dhabi on the 14th of April. The Pink Caravan will have over 180 riders divided into 15 - 18 riders daily, including the Pink Caravan's ambassadors.

The Pink Caravan's ride aims to spread greater awareness about breast cancer, encourage regular tests and raise funds to buy a 3D mammogram clinic which will provide free tests for citizens and expatriates in the country.
