Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General, Dubai Municipality, inaugurated on Wednesday the ‘Preserve Marina’ campaign, designed and organised by the Environment Emergency Office and the Municipality, at Jaddaf shipyard, Dubai.

The campaign, which the municipality has been conducting for seven consecutive years, is aimed at enlightening the public on the importance of preserving the marine areas of Dubai.

Waving the start-up flag at volunteers ready for cleaning up the waters, Lootah said, “We all
should realise the importance of marine areas and recognise its recreational value”.

“It is the seventh consecutive year that we are holding the campaign and this time twice,” said Khalid Suleiten, Head of the Environment Emergency Office at Dubai Municipality.

“The municipality’s commitment to preserve the environment and the wide response we got last time pushed us to repeat it with greater enthusiasm,” he added.

A comprehensive clean-up programme joining hands with people of various nationalities is scheduled as part of the campaign. The waste recovered from the marine areas, especially the creek, is to be transported to designated sites for recycling.

An awareness programme listed in the campaign activities will cover fishermen, shipping companies, vessel crews and the public who flock to the seaside in the evenings.

Various programmes started on Wednesday will continue until Thursday in all the marine areas in Dubai. Divers from Dubai Police and cadre from Civil Defence will lead the ‘Clean the Creek’ move.

A waste collection competition for divers has been announced and winners will be given attractive prizes.
