UAE labour authorities rejected a request by a local laundry to issue a work permit for a receptionist, saying such a job would threaten the woman’s safety in a place confined to men, newspapers reported on Tuesday.
The company submitted the application to bring in a foreign woman to work as a receptionist during an open-day meeting held by the ministry of labour every week to tackle problems facing the private sector.
Ministry officials told the applicants that the laundry is not a “qualified” place for a woman’s job on the grounds it is involved only in washing clothes.
“Giving permission for this job could threaten the woman’s safety as the company workers are all men and this amounts to violation of work permits,” the ministry of labour said during the meeting on Monday.
