Members of triathlon group TriDubai got together on Saturday morning for a memorial swim to honour champion triathlete Roy Nasr. Forty-nine-year-old Roy, who had co-founded the group, died on September 6 after a car rammed into him during his morning training ride.

Two other riders who had trained with him that morning survived the crash with minor injuries.

After the swim yesterday, members gathered together on the beach and lit lanterns and released them into the morning sky.

Speaking at the event, Ian Le Pelley, who partnered with Roy to set up TriDubai: “We may have lost our friend [Roy], but we may not lose our memories of him and the impact he has had.

“The extent to the outpouring of grief and love that followed Roy’s death shows how much he meant to all of us and the influence he had on our lives.”

“One of his legacies is this club… our club that he created.”

Roy hailed from Lebanon, and is survived by wife Tina, children Tala and Elie.

He was working as Chief Operating Officer at Abela and Co and had co-founded TriDubai.

The police reported that the driver was intoxicated when the accident had occurred and has since been arrested.

Media reports that followed identified the driver as WJ, a Filipino employee, who apologised for his actions when he appeared in court for the hearing on September 23.
