Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, yesterday inspected progress of the Dubai Metro.

Sheikh Maktoum travelled on a train and was updated about the construction of stations, tunnels and other facilities by Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman and Executive Director of the Roads and Transport Authority.

The Metro, which will become the city's major commuter artery, will extend 75km, making it one of the longest networks in the world.

There will be about 47 stations, including nine underground ones.

Sheikh Maktoum expressed satisfaction with what had been achieved so far and said the project, when completed, would be one of the country's major flagship landmarks.

The project, he added, would attract more holidaymakers to the UAE, giving a big boost to tourism and energising and diversifying the local economy.
