A Dh575 million contract to improve a section of Al Khail Road has been awarded to the Emirates Road Contracting Company.

The contract, awarded by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), covers the first phase of a six-stage project to improve the highway – one of the largest road schemes under way in Dubai.

"This project is part of the RTA's drive to upgrade key routes and covers a strategically important road corridor," said Mattar Al Tayer, the authority's Chairman and Executive Director.

"The RTA's efforts are gathering pace to develop and widen key and arterial roads in Dubai within the overall strategy to cope with the expanding urban development seen by the emirate.

"Emirates Road Contracting submitted the best offer among four bids. The project consists of a multi-level interchange at the junction of Al Khail Road and Emirates Road plus six bridges to ensure seamless traffic flow in all directions.

"Emirates Road and Al Khail Roads are two vital traffic hubs in Dubai and channel large traffic flows. There are several property developments in the area such as Jumeirah Village South, Dubai Sports City and the International Media Production Zone.

"The RTA will pay particular attention to traffic diversions to ensure minimum disturbance on the roads," said Al Tayer.

Al Khail Road is one of the key routes parallel to Sheikh Zayed Road and Emirates Road. It starts at Bu Kadrah Interchange and terminates at Emirates Road and consists of four lanes in each direction.

Four roundabouts will be transformed into flyover interchanges under the improvement scheme.

This project is part of the RTA's strategic plan that focuses in part on developing the roads network to cope with the increase in traffic resulting from a projected six per cent annual rise in Dubai's population.
