Messi marks Miami return with assist after Argentina retirement
Inter Miami captain sets up opening goal in 2-2 draw with Atlanta United in his first match since ending his international career
Fort Lauderdale, Florida: Lionel Messi marked his return to club action with an assist as Inter Miami drew 2-2 with Atlanta United in Major League Soccer on Saturday, days after announcing his retirement from international football.
Messi, who captained Argentina to World Cup victory in 2022 and a runners-up finish in 2026, started for Miami in a match delayed by more than 90 minutes because of heavy rain and lightning.
The 39-year-old created Miami's opening goal in the 32nd minute when his corner was headed home by midfielder Casemiro.
Atlanta equalised three minutes later after a deflected cross fell to Miguel Almirón, who slotted the ball into the net.
Luis Suárez restored Miami's lead just before half-time, but Breel Embolo converted an 87th-minute penalty to secure a point for Atlanta.
Messi entered the match in strong form after scoring four goals and providing an assist in Miami's 7-1 victory over CF Montreal last weekend.
The Argentine is now joint top of the MLS scoring charts with 18 goals this season.
Earlier this week, Messi announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a distinguished Argentina career that included World Cup triumph in 2022 and a second-place finish at the 2026 tournament.
Messi had previously expressed uncertainty about continuing his playing career following the death of his father, Jorge, on 8 August.
