The Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) announced yesterday that it approved the award of a Dh307 million contract to construct Phase IV of Al Khail Road Improvement Project (Intersection of Al Khail Road and Umm Suqeim Road).
The project completion period is 13 months so that it synchronises with the opening of the first three phases of the project.
"Phase IV of Al Khail Road Improvement Project will see the replacement of the existing roundabout at the intersection of Al Khail Road and Umm Suqeim Road by a multi-level interchange to provide free traffic flow in all directions, besides widening Al Khail Road from four to six lanes," said Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of RTA.
The project includes shifting and protecting the facilities and utilities affected by the free interchange and related landscaping works.
RTA has divided the Al Khail project into six phases. Work is underway on the first three phases at a cost of Dh1.8bn. Phase I, costing Dh575m, involves construction of a multi-level interchange at the junction of Al Khail Road and Emirates Road besides six bridges.
Phase II, awarded to Gunal Construction at Dh851m, covers construction of two multi-level flyovers instead of the existing two roundabouts at the intersection of Al Khail Road with Street 319 and Street 323 at Al Qouz residential and industrial areas.
Phase III, awarded to Ascon Contracting at a cost of Dh438m, involves upgrading the road extending from the intersection with Umm Suqeim Road to the intersection of Emirates Road, as well as widening of the existing road.
