Dubai's Emal, GE Energy in $200m turbine deal

GE Energy will supply technology to Emal to help it reduce the environmental impact and improve efficiency of the complex, expected to be the world's largest single-site aluminium smelter complex, and meet regulatory requirements, the two companies said in a statement.
Phase one of the project -- at Al Taweelah in Abu Dhabi emirate -- will have capacity of more than 2,000 megawatts of electricity, which will be used to produce 700,000 metric tonnes of aluminium per year. It is due to be completed by December.
Phase two will increase capacity to 1.4 million tonnes of aluminium per year and is expected to be completed in 2013-2014.
Emal is a 50-50 joint venture between Dubai Aluminium Company Limited (Dubal) and Mubadala Development Company (Mubadala), Abu Dhabi's investment vehicle.
