Broken pieces of glass severely injured a thief while he was breaking the glass door of a Sharjah supermarket in a failed theft attempt on Monday night.

On Monday morning, Khalfan Chenganakkattil, manager of Al Deba Supermarket in the Al Wahda area of Sharjah near the City Centre, was surprised to see drops of blood all over the place – on the broken glass door, on the shop’s floor, cash counter and even on vehicles parked outside the shop.

Blood stains could be seen both inside the shop and from the shop’s entrance to the car park, indicating that the wounded thief drove away in his vehicle.

The shop, which opened only six months ago, is owned by a businessmen from Malappuram in the southern Indian state of Kerala.

Says Khalfan: “When I came to open the shop at 6am on Tuesday, I was surprised to find broken glass pieces and blood stains in front of the shop. The shutter lock was found opened with an iron rod. When I tried to open the shutter, I could see blood on the glass, on the floor and on vehicles parked outside the supermarket.”

Employees of the shop left after 12 midnight on Monday after locking the shutter but employees of a nearby restaurant saw the glass door of the shop broken.

“After realising that there was a theft attempt, I called Sharjah Police. They advised me not to open the shop. A Sharjah police team came and opened the shop. There were used tissue papers with blood stains thrown all over the place. The robber seems to have tried to wipe off blood on the cash counter and other places in the shop,” he added.

The thief left his Emirates ID card in the shop before fleeing with a weighing scale, some cosmetics, some coins and a wallet with the identity card and other documents of a supermarket employee.

“The national ID found in the shop belongs to a Pakistani national. Police also took finger prints,” the manager added.

Sharjah Police is trying to locate the wounded thief, who left behind many clues before fleeing in desperation. The police came with a forensic team to collect evidence from the shop and the culprit may be caught soon.

“There was some money in the cash counter but the thief could not take it either because he was wounded severely or because he could not open the drawer,” the manager said.

Sharjah Police is looking at wounded patients in clinics and hospitals in the emirate.
