The Dubai Court of Appeal upheld a one-year jail term for a Briton who forged a passport and used a Visa credit card in the same name to buy jewellery worth Dh180,000.

The same court upheld the verdict of acquittal for his compatriot.

Dubai Prosecution had accused MA, 23, AAA, 33, visitor and a fugitive of forging a passport belonging to a British citizen and using his Visa card to buy an expensive watch and jewellery worth about Dh180,000.

They were also accused of forging the entry stamp of Dubai International Airport on a British passport belonging to Charles William Stump.
They are also accused of forging the passport by removing its holder’s picture and replacing it with another and changing  information on the same page.

The two used the card and a photocopy of the forged passport while paying for a watch of Dh137,150 value. They also paid Dh40,250 for jewellery bought from a shop in the same way.

The two then went to another shop and tried to sell some of the jewellery.  As they did not submit invoices that prove their ownership of the jewellery they want to sell, the shop’s salesman notified the CID who were in the gold souk.

Searching them, police found a photocopy of a British passport and a Visa card besides gold jewellery.

Police found their passport and torn invoices for the jewellery in the place where they stayed.

AAA confessed to buying the jewellery using the Visa card and the forged passport. He told police that he was badly in need of money so he called his friend in Britain who came specifically to help him commit the crime using a forged passport.

Forensic reported forgery of the passport and the authenticity of the Visa card.
