A Filipino salesman, who used a mobile phone for six months after he stole it, enabling the police to trace and identify him, was sentenced to one month in jail by the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance.

AJ, 27, salesman in a garment shop in Ibn Battuta Mall, picked the mobile phone that a customer had forgotten in a pocket of a pair of trousers that she had tried on in the shop.

MM, 53, Jordanian engineer, accompanied two of her friend, went to a garment shop in Ibn Battuta Mall.

“In the shop, I tried on a pair of trousers but left it in the fitting room. My friends and I came out of the shop and went straight home. Back in my house, I remembered that I had forgotten my mobile phone in the pocket of a pair of trousers. I rushed with my friends to the mall which is 15 about minutes drive from my place,” she told the police.

The three women searched in the fitting room for the pair of trousers but did not find it.

Asking salesmen in the shop, all denied finding it, so the women called the police.

Police arrived and searched the shop and questioned the salesmen but did not find anything.

About six months after the incident, police contacted MM and asked her to come and collect her mobile phone.

Police found out that the salesman in the shop used the mobile phone with his own SIM card six months after he had pocketed it.

He connected the mobile to the Internet and used all programmes stored on the mobile.

AJ admitted to stealing the mobile phone and said that he had found it in a pair of trousers in the trial room.

“I put it in a bag and took it home with me without informing anyone in the shop,” he admitted.

Prosecution noted that the accused was arrested after using the mobile found in his possession.
