Spain has offered to supply the UAE with solar and wind technology.

The suggestion came from Laraz Filitta, Minister of Economy and Finance in the Government of Spanish region of Aragon.

He said the UAE's participation in a major water and sustainable development exhibition in Zaragoza, the capital of Aragon, would further promote relations between the countries.

"Spanish firms specialising in emission-free energy production are co-operating with Masdar, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, to produce clean energy as well as on the construction of zero-carbon city," he said.

"Masdar is a pioneer in clean energy, sustainable development and the provision of water for development and industry. There are potential UAE-Spanish joint ventures on renewable energy, which is the strategic solution to current worldwide issues," he said.

The UAE is one of 96 nations taking part in the water event, called Expo Zaragoza 2008. Officials said the country would use the occasion to further strengthen its credibility as a leader in the field of sustainable development.

The exhibition will showcase state-of-the-art solutions to the problem of supplying sufficient water as populations grow and urban, economic and industrial development continues.

The organisers expect eight million people to visit the event, which opened on Saturday and continues until September 14.
